Clinical

I offer the John F Barnes style of Myofascial Release (MFR) Therapy which is a specialised way of working with a person’s soft tissue and energy.

It is very slow, deep and often static bodywork that allows me to listen to your body. I sink slowly in to the fascia level. Once I have connected to the fascia that wants to be worked with, your fascia moves me to the next point of working. The fascia is changing shape and changing direction, it’s correlation to itself and other layers of soft tissue are becoming more “malleable” and less “hooked” together. Therefore, you may experience different types of sensation in your body as this happens. You are also likely to feel sensations not just at the locality of work, but in other areas of the body as fascia connects bone, muscle, tendons, ligaments, organs, skin together. In fact in the embryo as you were developing, all of you was fascia. This is why fascia is so connected, and communicates with itself so clearly throughout the entire body. It is not yet scientifically understood how this communication actually takes place, and also how it integrates with the nervous system; however scientific research is ongoing globally and it is only a matter of time before fascia and its integration with the nervous system is fully understood.

During this listening of the fascia and its return to a more slide and glide quality, if you are feeling safe you may feel that part of your body wants to move of its own free will, without you asking it to. This is absolutely normal and is called Myofascial Unwinding. I can help support this movement physically and energetically, and I will encourage you to move, rather than you deciding to resist the movement for fear of feeling weird or unsure that it is really happening. Our bodies have this innate capacity to heal through the slightest of movements, so please let it. Our bodies have their own unique communication network through fascia, and when that fascial system intends to move, let’s support it and see what happens – you might be pleasantly surprised.

MFR is a great treatment if you have aching areas of your body that need to be softened. It also helps if you have persistent pain in joints, muscle, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and bone. When clients come with plantar fasciitis, we often find the origin in the shoulder or neck area. Some clients experiencing headaches are relieved of their symptoms by working very specifically with the upper shoulder and neck muscles. I see a number of clients with hip, low back and knee issues. It is wonderful to see clients experience their relief and a gain in their understanding, that arises from using a combination of body-listening and MFR Therapy to link these areas. Some clients come for a problem-solving approach due to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement after a past injury appears to be causing issues in the long-term. I have particularly observed this to be the case around neck, shoulders, low back, knees and ankles

The Benefit

If clients have been holding psychological and emotional trauma, myofascial unwinding can help them to release that experienced trauma. Often people come for MFR Therapy when they have explored different types of help and are on the verge of accepting that they may have to live with their physical and mental pain for the rest of their lives. Fear not, a change needs to be identified and experienced to help us move forward, and MFR Therapy is really good at pinpointing that which needs to change, and helping that which needs be released, to indeed be released.
