Esalen (Relaxation & Deep Tissue) Massage

This massage was pioneered on Native American land replete with natural hot springs, nestled on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean in Northern California. The Esalen Institute was developed on this land by a community defining a new way forward for living authentically, hence healing from trauma accumulated through life’s journey. Esalen massage was created by mind and body-work professionals pursuing and experimenting with ideas and techniques, to help and support a traumatised, exhausted, locked-up body to release, and therefore feel and move with ease.
Esalen massage uses a combination of long, soothing strokes with compassionate deep tissue work and gentle stretching. Clients usually feel a flow in the work which is great at getting them to “drop-in” to their bodies and rest, recuperate, touch-base, ground, re-connect with themselves.
Sometimes clients feel emotional during this treatment and they are held safely with breathwork, a continuation of the work, a conversation about what is happening, or a gentle chat about what is happening for them or has happened for them in the past. If the client would like a pause in the work, that is also okay. The practice is designed to work with the client so that the client receives the treatment that they need.
The Benefit
Clients who have experienced long-term stress, anxiety, work and relationship situations, self-esteem issues and depression have been helped by this type of massage as it gives them a pause and a safe body space where they can observe it all, without feeling overwhelmed. If they do become triggered, a combination of long stroke and breathwork, or some hands-on-holding can create calm and the feeling of being in command again.
Esalen Massage is great with hot stones, particularly the long-flow stroke from hand to foot.
