Trauma Release

This type of massage is very much in its infancy, but don’t be put off by that. This is my take on trauma release, and it is work that I am actively practising with clients that are seeking help, usually during or after counselling, and they are aware that something is stuck in the body, and it needs to come out to help them feel better.

My combination of MFR Therapy, Scar Tissue work, Hands-On-Holding, energy, breath and mobilisation work appear to be working deeply in the psyche and body simultaneously. This combination works efficiently when a client is ready to “let-go” or identify or gain knowledge of what is “holding” on the body-mind circuit.

When I use a variety of body, breath and energy techniques, a client is able to experience their parasympathetic nervous system (thrive/rest/recuperate/heal state). When this state is achieved a client “feels” safe, the body perceives it is safe on a very deep level (pre-frontal cortex, mammalian and reptilian brain levels), and those memories/events/feelings/thoughts/energy that a client may feel they need to deal with, may present themselves in to the client’s current experience during treatment. Sometimes a client may become emotional, insightful, or may indicate that they are dealing with this and it is private, but they are comfortable experiencing it.

I believe both physical and emotional trauma is held in the body. The body assimilates this trauma by the tissues changing shape and direction, and that essentially the body evolves and adapts to that change. I also believe that there is an energy component to trauma. The Principle of the Conservation of Energy (1842-1847) (Helmholtz, Mayer, Joule) states that “Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.” As we are energetic beings living in an energetic environment, when we fall against something physically, or are hit with verbal abuse, we are absorbing that energy and “holding” it in a specific way to enable our bodies to continue to do what they are supposed to be doing to keep us functioning and living. To sum-up, I believe that energy outside our bodies that is the “cause” of trauma, is being transformed through our own bodies to a type of stored energy.

The Benefit

I believe this stored energy can be released, and I believe that the tissues can be encouraged to change direction and shape. I have observed that this happens most efficiently and effectively when a client is experiencing their parasympathetic nervous system, i.e. they are relaxed, breathing neutrally, feeling they are at a comfortable temperature, feeling safe and feeling that they can move or make a sound if they need to.
